From Rural Scotland - Author Sue Hewitt

Hi ya’ll.
We’re back with our last author bio of 2015. We would like to introduce UK author Sue Hewitt. We’ll let her tell you about herself:

Sue was born in Kent in 1957. She has lived happily with her family in the Scottish Borders for the past 25 years. The Cunning Woman's Cup is her first novel. Sue has written sporadically as a pastime since childhood, never thinking it would be possible to get published. The support of friends, family and fellow members of Kelso Writers' Group encouraged her to embark on self-publishing The Cunning Woman's Cup. Serendipitously, she discovered that almost on her very doorstep (in fact, the very doorstep of the house she had first moved into in Scotland) lives Chris Foster - proofreader, editor and ally - whose expertise in transforming an amateur manuscript into a publishable, professional product was priceless. Additionally, Chris's son Kit Foster (who Sue remembers as a small boy) is now an award winning book cover designer. Kit's work in formatting the text and providing all the technical support a technophobe could ever need, as well as producing a superb cover design, has also been invaluable. Sue works as housekeeper and gardener for the artist Susan Ryder. She lives in a picturesque lodge house with arch-shaped windows and doors and enjoys the rural life.

Thanks Sue. Everyone should check out her work on our BROWSE for BOOKS page at www.CarterNovels.com/browse-for-books.html

That’s all for now and we wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas Season…later RC & JP Carter.

From New England to Michigan - Meet Author Linda Watkins

Hi ya'll,

Today we would like to introduce award winning author Linda Watkins. Apparently she likes dogs. We'll let her tell us the rest....

Born in New England, Linda Watkins' family moved to Michigan when she was a child. But her east coast roots remained strong and, each summer, she journeyed back to visit relatives in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine. Her favorite place to visit was a remote island, accessible only by boat.

When Linda graduated from college, (Carnegie Mellon '70), she relocated to San Francisco Bay Area where she lived and worked for thirty years. But the allure of that special island remained strong and, in 2006, she packed up her four dogs and belongings and fulfilled her dream, moving to Chebeague Island, Maine (year-round pop. 350).

She lived there for seven years and, while a resident, she penned her award-winning novel of horror and suspense, MATEGUAS ISLAND (published in April of 2014). In December of that same year, she published the sequel to MATEGUAS, aptly titled, RETURN TO MATEGUAS ISLAND.

Today, she resides in Western Michigan and is at work on the 3rd full-length novel in the Mateguas Series, GHOSTS OF MATEGUAS.

Thanks Linda. If you haven't checked out her work, drop by BROWSE for BOOKS where she is currently featured.

A note to indie authors: Be sure to check out the new affordable promotional page -- the Indie Book Source. It launches January 1, 2016 and we are currently accepting orders.

The Seamy Side of London

Hi ya'll,
It's our pleasure to introduce you to British crime novelist Steven Latto. Here's Steven's bio so you can get acquainted:

Steven H Latto sold his first novel The Ferrier Boys while working as a Security Officer in Ascot, Berkshire. A few people, once they found out he had self-published a book, asked him to sign their copies while he was at work or hanging around with friends. Steven didn't expect much more to come of this. As it turned out, the quick flash in the pan that Steven expected it to be, with his urban crime thriller The Ferrier Boys making it to bestseller lists for the first seven months of its release.

To date, Steven H Latto’s book The Ferrier Boys is still on a bestseller list for urban fiction on Amazon Kindle, making the odd appearance in the top 100 on the list for crime thriller. Steven's novels will center primarily on the urban setting of London, a city he loves so much, and crime, part of his profession as a Security Officer in one of London’s most prestigious iconic  5  star hotels.

Though Steven H Latto now lives in Horsham, West Sussex, he was born in Munster, Germany and grew up in a military environment.  After finishing school, he began his career in the Royal Air Force where he studied electronic engineering. It wasn’t until nine years later in search of new horizons, that he began to pen his first novel while staying in a hotel on the M3 motorway for three weeks. When not writing from his Horsham home, or on the train to and from work, Steven tirelessly researches for all his other books and ideas that float around inside his head all day, distracting him from everything else he should be concentrating on. His latest distraction has been his next three books:   The Cuban Hustle, Bent and Diamond Geezers (not necessarily in that order).

(A special note to U.S. Readers: A big shoutout to readers in the USA. I want to gift 10 copies of my UK Amazon kindle bestseller, The Ferrier Boys. A review would be much appreciated in return... but not necessary, preferably readers with an interest in British gangsters, urban fiction, crime and thrillers. If interested please private message me your email address so I can send you a copy. Click here:  Steven H Latto  )

Thanks Steven! We're looking forward to more of your stories from the "non-tourist" area of England. Drop by and check out Ferrier Boys on our BROWSE for BOOKS page.

Dark of the Moon

Hi all,
Recently we spent a week on Flagler Beach. We (RC & I, our son & one of our daughters & their families) rented a beautiful, brand new home. Our son, daughter & son in law surfed everyday. RC, my daughter in law, grandchildren & I played in the waves & rescued starfish washed ashore by an off shore storm. We also took lots of long walks, built sandcastles  & spent time stargazing.
Flagler Beach is close to St, Augustine Florida, one of our favorite places to visit. It is also one of  our favorite places to ghost hunt. St. Augustine is very old & has lost many of it's citizens to a Yellow Fever epidemic & the many battles to storm the city. Castillo de San Marcos Fort is an undefeated fort, it was never lost in battle but many tried to overrun the fort & city. It is also the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. So on this visit we decided to visit the fort at least one day. We found it so interesting we came back the next day after visiting St. Augustine Lighthouse in the morning. We asked the Park Ranger on duty if there were any spots in the fort that were reportedly haunted. He told us many people reported seeing , hearing & "feeling" things. He told us stories about the Indians kept in the fort & about the many battles fought there. Before we left his company we asked where the "hot spots" were & if we could do some investigating. After being told "Go for it" we went on our merry way. We set up in one of the many reportedly haunted places & immediately started getting EMF hits. Two women came in & asked what we were doing, after we told them they immediately told us there house was haunted by a child & asked if we could investigate their home. Unfortunately we had no time on this trip. We packed it up & went home for more surfing & swimming. As I said we had spent the morning at the lighthouse. If you ever get a chance to visit St. Augustine & you like history both the fort & the lighthouse are a must on your itinerary. The fort has a self guided tour & at the lighthouse you can either do a self guided tour or a guided tour during the day. However if you like the paranormal you HAVE to go on the Dark of the Moon Tour. You can find the times, price etc. on their website: http://www.staugustinelighthouse.org . The tour is both informative & entertaining. The only way to see the lighthouse & grounds at night is on the tour. Even if you are not a believer in things that go bump in the night the lighthouse & the view from the top are beautiful. We have done this tour more than once. RC, our daughter, our daughter in law, our grandson (14) & I did the tour this time. We did the guided tour & our daughter immediately started getting hits on the EMF in the lighthouse. She & our grandson were asking questions & getting "yes" "no" answers on the EMF detector (Lit up means yes, not lit up means no). We however had not much luck. We set up a laser grid & recorder in the lighthouse office (the recorder is for EVP-electronic  voice phenomena; voices not heard with the human ear but caught on the recorder).  Then the tour went on to the keeper's house. As I said we had done this tour before. We have always had the most activity in the basement of the keeper's house.  At the end of the tour you have an hour to explore by yourselves. We asked lots of questions using the EMF detectors & then decided since "Pete" (a lighthouse keeper when alive & apparently while dead also) was being so responsive to do a flash light session. You can watch a four minute video taken at the beginning of the session which lasted for the better part of an hour here: https://youtu.be/psPJQkpu3uw.  Most of the people on the tour stayed & watched.  You can hear their reactions on the video. They had lots of questions which we gladly answered. One woman asked to see the flashlight when we ended the session. I told her "Of course!" When she finished she exclaimed "Oh my gosh! This is just a normal flash light! And there is NO WAY to make the light dim & brighten like it did! I'm a believer now!" One of the interesting things that happened was RC asked "Pete" to move the flashlight......which he did. Well more stories later.....Joan (JP)

Rik Stone - Living the Dream

Hi ya'll,
From across the pond we would like to introduce our colleague Mr. Rik Stone. Rising above circumstances, his success story is remarkable. Now, in his own words...

Rik grew up amidst the slum-lands of fifties North East England, and left school at fifteen without any academic qualifications.  He worked in the shipyards on a local river and later went into the Merchant Navy and then, following that, worked in quarries in South East England. The time came he yearned for change. Studying was the only option that was realistic, so he worked through the low level stuff and on to a BSc. degree in mathematics and computing.
But it was fiction writing that always been his want and after an early retirement at fifty years of age, he was able to pursue his dream seriously. To the point, he is now on the brink of publishing the third novel in the Birth of an Assassin series. Watch out for The Man in the Blue Fez.

Be sure to drop by and check out his works on the BROWSE for Books  carousels.

The House on the River

Recently we had the pleasure to do two investigations. The first was in a private home. A couple recently bought a 105 year old home. I have to say this home is amazing. It is near a river, almost every window has stained glass(many of the windows are from old churches ready to be torn down), built in church pews, altars & surrounded by a tall wrought iron fence. As we drove up & saw this home ,I turned to my husband & daughter ,clapped my hands & said "This is going to be FUN!!!!".  The owners had not yet moved in but were waiting there to meet us. The previous owner had told them that the house was haunted by four ghosts. They wanted us to investigate to see if there was anything paranormal happening & if there was to see if it was well or ill intentioned. They made it very clear that any well intentioned entities were welcome to stay but anything that was dark, negative &  ill intentioned had to leave. We started the investigation by doing a base line EMF (electromagnetic field). Everything was very low except near the bar refrigerator. Since none of the activity happened around there we didn't worry about that. We went upstairs to the first room to see if there was activity. As we entered I noticed another room that I felt we needed to investigate. We were told that was where the previous owner "communicated" with the entities. However  we continued into the first room. We spent some time there using EMF detectors & Gauss meters (which can also detect electromagnetic fields). Nothing happened, no blips on our detectors, no odd sounds....nothing. We moved on to the next room. The room that would be the master bedroom. Still not the room that I was itching to investigate but it was the room the previous owner's Mother had lived in. She died in Hospice but this room had been her last home. We all settled in & started asking questions. At first all was quiet, no blips on our meters in answer to our questions. Then my daughter leaned over toward me (I later learned to ask if I had heard sound from the hall) when her gauss meter lit up like a Christmas tree. We asked many questions which the entity answered by lighting up the meter once for yes & twice for no. We discovered it was not the previous owner's Mom & that she was no longer there. Whoever was communicating was very cagey about their identity. We heard tapping in the hall as if someone was tapping on glass. Of course this is a very old house. So a lot of creaks ,groans & cracks are expected to be heard. Finally we decided to investigate the room we had passed by at the beginning. We went into the room , set up flashlights which can be turned on &  off by turning them & turned them to just the point where a slight turn will turn them on. We could then communicate with the entity by having them turn the flashlight on & off. If you watch our four minute video from the St. Augustine lighthouse you will see what I mean. Also they seem to be able to dim the lights & brighten them which we can't seem to achieve. We asked a few questions......nothing. I decided to go downstairs & get our laser grid pen. When I came back upstairs everyone was excited because the flashlight had turned on. I set the grid up & then the fun began. The entity turned the light on & off on command for an hour. Just before the light would turn on the grid lights would be broken. At one point we heard a very loud crack from the hall. Also we had a lot of EMF activity. We had recorders set up but we had no EVPs(electronic voice phenomenon....a recording of a voice that can not be heard by the human ear). We finally shut down & were very happy to say there did not seem to be any negative or evil activity. They are happy to share their beautiful home as long as their wishes are respected. We have been invited to return & investigate again, which we are eager to do. We will give you an update . Our next blog will be about The Dark of the Moon tour at St. Augustine lighthouse....now that was FUN too.

Chiari Warriors - Join the Cause

Hi ya'll,
We recently blogged about the Chiari Malformation drive. This one is worth revisiting. Please take a few minutes to read about this:

"This is an anthology of short stories by 18 authors from across the globe - the UK, the USA, Canada, and Europe - The tales they tell are both non fiction and fiction. Many are based on real life experiences. Others are based on vision and a wondrous source of imagination that these very special authors bring to their readers. Some of the stories they tell will make you cry, others will make you laugh. But some of their writing will actually terrify you when you realise that some of the accounts they recall are actually true stories from real events in their lives. Indeed, there's something for everyone here: tales of love and war, of honour and disobedience, of hate and humour, of desire and desperation. They have produced a roller coaster of emotion on their journey to complete this anthology. It's a book to savour and enjoy, page by page. Above all, this anthology contains the true story of a young boy who suffers from Chiari Malformation - a condition for which there is currently no known cure. The work itemizes the condition and the problems associated with this horrible human condition. Meet Romance Author Tamara Ferguson

  Hi ya'll,
Rarely do we get to introduce an author who does so much to support indie writers. Tamara is a stay at home mom from Illinois, USA. Her bio speaks for itself:

A member of the Romance Writers of America, as well as the FTHRW Chapter, Tamara Ferguson is the top-ten, best-selling and multi-award winning author of the Kissed By Fate New Adult Romance Series and the Tales of The Dragonfly Contemporary Women’s Romance Suspense Series.  Her latest release is Two Hearts Surrendered. This military romance is her contribution to the bestselling Magical Weddings anthology, which includes stories by fifteen USA Today, best-selling, and award-winning authors. Tales of the Dragonfly Book II: In Flight was a 2014 WINNER at the Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards. Her latest release, That Unforgettable Kiss was recently a top ten Amazon bestseller in Kindle Saga Fiction and has just received 3-5★editorial reviews from Readers’ Favorite.

Since she’s the mom and full-time caregiver of an autistic son, you can usually find Tammy working at home, where she spends a lot of time not completing numerous home improvement projects because she’s writing or helping indie authors promote their books on twitter.

Thanks Tamara for all you do for us. So drop by our BROWSE for BOOKS page and check out Tamara's work: http://www.carternovels.com/browse-for-books.html

Why Write About Drones? An Interview With RC & JP Carter

Check out our most recent interview on author Fredrick Lee Brooke's website.
Why Write About Drones? With Authors RC & JP Carter: http://frederickleebrooke.com/wp/2015/09/why-writer-about-drones-with-authors-rc-jp-carter/

The growing public obsession with drones is a worldwide phenomena. The now peaceful and legal use by law abiding citizens in the largely unregulated arena of drones, is currently untapped by the criminal element. The novel CLONE DRONES explores not only the use of drones, but the potential use of  3D printing to reproduce existing weaponized drone technology.

CLONE DRONES explores that possibility. Jack Magnus said in his Readers' Favorite Review:
"Clone Drones... is a fast-paced and enjoyable thriller that blends politics, high tech and organized crime. ....Clone Drones also exposes the inherent risks of drone technology as an effective assassination tool."

The Pen Behind the M.D.

 Hi ya'll,

Today we'd like to introduce the real Mason Lucas, M.D. ....Gary Birken, M.D. His new book ERROR IN DIAGNOSIS is featured on our BROWSE for B page and is a Rx for thrills. We'll let Gary tell you a bit about himself:
Before I first set pen to paper as a novel writer, I was a full time pediatric surgeon. Nine years and six novels later, I am still a busy pediatric surgeon. The question I'm asked most often is; how do you find time to do both? The simplest answer is that when you spend every waking hour pursuing your life's passions, you can always find time. Practically speaking, I try to arrange my surgical schedule to leave some time for writing. But even with the best intentions and planning, it's not always possible to write every day. It's the price one pays for having a day job. Fortunately, vacations and weekends off offer a wonderful opportunity to write. When I'm not in the operating room or writing, I utilize whatever time remains to play tennis and basketball. I also hold a black belt in martial arts and try to spend as much time as I can in the dojo.

Thanks Gary. So take a minute to drop in and check out ERROR IN DIAGNOSIS.

A Must Read Mystery -

Hi ya'll,

Just perusing some of our reviews on Amazon and discovered a brand new review! As it's from another published author we appreciate the different angle from which they view another author's work.
They gave FLASH ZOMBIES a 5 Star rating! Here's what she had to say:

A Must Read Mystery!
By TMBorgwardt on September 7, 2015
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Once again I am thoroughly impressed by this well written mystery. I love Ryan and his team of investigators. The Carter's do an excellent job of composing a compelling and thrilling private detective series that always has an unique flare or twist.

This particular story was incredible as the detectives had a couple of different cases that they were working on that eventually intertwined. The detail and knowledge that flows onto the pages regarding being a private detective and the new advances in technology is well thought out, and detailed enough that I was able to visualize the equipment they were using etc.

It was nice to see the characters develop even more and the relationships evolve and deepen. The storyline is engaging and is a true page-turner. There is plenty of action, some violence, some brewing romance, and of course some mystery to keep you interested.

Excellent job and I can't wait to read the next one!!!

Thanks Trista for your kind input! A note to those who are wondering.....FLASH ZOMBIES is neither about zombies or flashers. Pick up a copy today and see for yourself.   http://www.Amazon.com/dp/B00KGHZE6W

Steve LeBel - Michigander Extraordinaire

Hi ya'll,It's our pleasure to introduce you to Author Steve LeBel. The awards that Steve's book have won speak for themselves. Take a moment to get acquainted:

Businessmen are serious people, right?  Not always. Steve LeBel — hospital president, technology entrepreneur, algorithmic stock trader — is definitely not serious.
Not when he writes.
Whimsy overcomes him at the word processor. And whimsy is at the core of his novel, The Universe Builders, which he tells with a unique balance of seriousness, humor, and imagination.
LeBel lives in Muskegon, Michigan with his wife Marge, and Mindy and Dexter, their cats.  When not writing, he is planning his next trip, cussing out the stock market, doing tech support for friends, or dreaming up new plots for The Universe Builders.

So next stop (seriously) is to drop by our BROWSE for BOOKS page and check out The Universe Builders.   http://www.carternovels.com/browse-for-books.html . You won't be sorry you did!

Strong Female Characters

The O'Rourke Series employs the use of strong female lead characters. Siobhan and Rachel are persistent and consistent with detective skills, marksmanship and bravery. They face everything head on and they don't stop until justice is served.
Here's what Readers' Favorite Reviewer Jack Magnus has to say in our Clone Drones review:

"Siobhan is the consummate example of grace under fire as she calmly and logically assesses her condition and works to free herself. Clone Drones also exposes the inherent risks of drone technology as an effective assassination tool. There's a lot going on in this story so readers must follow carefully lest they miss something. Clone Drones has a bit of something for anyone who enjoys high-octane thrillers with non-stop action and surprises, and it delivers. Clone Drones is recommended."

CHIARI WARRIORS -- Chiari Malformation Awareness

This is an anthology of short stories by 18 authors from across the globe - the UK, the USA, Canada, and Europe - The tales they tell are both non fiction and fiction. The work itemises the condition and the problems associated with this horrible human condition. Written by the self-styled Chiari Warriors, the book seeks to raise funds for health practitioners and research analysts. Accordingly, proceeds from the sale of this work will be donated to the Birmingham Children's Hospital Research Unit (a registered charity in the UK) in order to fund dedicated research into this life-threatening condition. The results of this research are shared across the globe between UK institutions, the Chiari Institute in New York, and elsewhere.
